Retired in Mexico, Riviera Maya.

How is it really ?

Well it is amazing to live here where the sun, the sea, the sites and monuments are surrounding you every day. The people are great and racism does not exist here. Still you must respect the rules and the population. It is fantastic to share the life of these people who are happy with so little. Always ready to help and advise you as well as explaining things and how to make your life easier. Of course I am a resident and not a tourist. It is very bad to see how some of them are not giving any respect to the locals and they believe the Mexican are at their disposal.

Anyway, for my part , in Cancun, I am retired and my small French pension is multiplied by 24 so in fact I make enough good money to live here. My partner and I are renting a new two floors, two bedrooms house with a patio in the back where my Orchids grow, for 4000 pesos. That is less than 170 euros or 220 usd per month and for that price, we are far from the center in a popular zone. All our neighbors are so nice and here they all say Hi to everybody. Water, gas or electricity is so affordable as well. Health care is nothing compair with the years I was living in the US.

Foodwise, from very cheap to very expensive, you find nearly everything. All foods are fresh and at home or in a restaurant, you always enjoy your meals. Most of the tourist believe that you only find Tacos, Burritos, Guacamole and Pico de Gallo but this is not only what the Mexican cuisine is. There is a lot lot more and it is easy to find very elaborated dishes. You just have to try. We go out so often and always try to go to a new place. International restaurants are ready to welcome you as well and for all kind of budget.

Regarding what to do, the beach of course but so many cultural sites and beautiful cities full of historical buildings. It is always very colorfull and that shows you why Mexicans are so joyfull all year long. At the moment of course, we all wear masks and this is mandatory even outside. Please note that in a bar or a restaurant you always tip 10 per cent minimum. There are many affordable houses to rent for vacations or small hotels and if you can avoid the huge all-inclusive resorts, you will be abble to appreciate a wonderfull country, stunnind people and great culture. Even notice than I am always delighted soon I see Mariachis, they are the soul of Mexico.

Joy everyday is my new life since 2015, no regrets no turning back just enjoying.

Divine Mister Dumpling restaurant in Cancun.

For few years we have been looking for an Asian restaurant that could offer us a nice variety of Dumplings. It is with such a pleasure that we found “Mister Dumpling”.

This new restaurant is not big and it gives you the choice of getting your table inside or outside. Nice place to park just infront of it at Plazza Fontana.

The staff will welcome you warmly and will esplain all the different dishes to you if you need. They offer other things that dumplings but we went there for those small delights.

We ordered two mixed plates with 16 pieces each and really this was stunning. I even order a plate of 4 redsauce one extra and it was a dream. Nice small selection of Mexican wines and I found myself so happy.

What a surprise when we discovered that for dessert, they made Chocolate dumplings with a light caramel sauce. We enjoyed this so so much.

We went bad and invited some friends to join us and all of them said the same thing : Delicious.

For sure this is oour new spot in town.

“La Brioche” in Cancun.

This is the Cancun version of this very nice Boulangerie from Playa del Carmen where they have 2 boutiques.

So you can go there to buy some French bread or Pastries. Croissants , brioche and pain au chocolat are waiting for you as well as some Quiche etc…

I had a pleasant Parisian breakfast and warm croissants arrived with my double expresso, The server installed a table outdoor for me. The service was very friendly as it should be and the place was very busy. The pastries are awesome and this is where I can get my favorite: the Paris-Brest.

It is quite small, and you will find La Brioche accross the street from Costco. Enjoy…

La Familia Corleone is the new restaurant of Julia in Cancun.

Julia the owner, changed from ” Il Famosi Pasta” to this new awesome restaurant ” La Familia Corleone”. Location, decor, menu its all new but the most important is that the charming attentions from Julia and the quality of the foods are still there.

There is a lot of parking spaces around this restaurant that is located in a new part of the city of Cancun at Plaza Fontana. Soon you arrive, you will be nicely greated by the staff and you know that the owner did a good job in teaching them.

Just the tables and chairs did follow from the previous restaurant. Everything else is new. There is a lovely terrace surounded by plants or you can go inside where the AC will help some days…

Typicaly Italian cuisine and you will for sure enjoy a beautiful Beef Carpacio but not only. Everything on this menu need to be tasted. The Pasta are very delicious and ” Al Dente”. Pizza are stunning and all the other dishes were interesting.

Some nice bottles of wine and of course, beautiful and delicious desserts.

Cherry on the cake, is Julia that will come to check if you are pleased and will always spend time to have a very nice chat with all the clients. It really is a place where the word “Welcome” means something.

Xkat-iK amazing restaurant in Cancun.

For Father’s day, I decided that that my lunch should include a Lobster. Discovering a new place was as well in my mind. Anyway, most of the restaurants in the city were far much to busy so we found a very nice spot in the Zona Hotelera.

Xkat-ik is located by the Laguna with a confusing entrance where a Tour company is located for boat visit of the Jungle and the Laguna. Still they have a few spots where to park your car but you have to wave a server so he will open a space for you.

First impression is awesome, you enter in a big terrace open to a garden that opens to the laguna will all the boats waiting for vivitors. The waiter gave us our table after he welcomed us warmly. With the menus in our hands, we ordered some drinks and I went for a beautiful Margarita.

The menu is not huge and that is a good sign. Unfortunetly, no Champagne and a poor selection of wine. Finally we picked up a Cabernet Sauvignon that was descent !

We were three so one started to order a Shrimp cocktail, the second went to a delicious Lime soup and I got the Avocado Xkat-ik with Schrim and vegetables in a nice mayo-sauce. For the main courses, A Flank steack, a pork meat in a Molcajete and I had what I wanted, a Lobster. All theses dishes were really delicious and the three of us enjoyed so much our wonderful lunch.

No way to finish a meal without a dessert so a Chocolate caka nice Pie de Limon, just to make our sweet touth happy. At the end we found the bill to be very reasonable and far less that we were expecting. Even with the tip we added.

This was a very enjoyable Father’s day lunch. I would recomand this nice restaurant, and we will go back again asap.

Another great dinner at El Kincho.

Oh boy, it was a delicious and asesome dinner at El Kincho again and that is in Cancun.

I love the way the staff greats you soon you arrive. You can seat outdoor or indoor as you feel like. The decor is nice and everywhere you look, it is very clean.

El Kincho is an Argentinian restaurant so so for sure can expect great meat. The sides are all awesome. But to start, you should try the Enpanisadas that are really yummy.

We have for this dinner, enjoyed a very nice Malbec wine and the waiter was pooring it soon we needed.

Of course the meat is absolutely delicious. My partener ordered a Rib Eye when I go the beef filet (filet mignon in the US). We had some French fries on the side but as well some a la Provencal and this was a great surprise for me as it was unusual and very good. All mest come with a salad as well.

They have a nice selection of desserts but we ordered, the house one that is a warm Chocolate cake with Dulce de Leche, vanilla and Dulce de Leche ice cream and this was a dream. It is really generous so I suggest you order one for two prople to share…

This is a wonderfull restaurant that I recomand and we will go back again for sure.

Surprising new restaurant in Cancun “El Kincho”.

We went to try this new place and in fact it was the grand opening. Argentinian meat in an awesome modern decor. We have been lucky as we got the last table.

The menu offers you a lot of Argentinian dishes and we started by 4 different Empanadas that were all really delicious. Of course after, some stunning Argentinian meat. You must be carreful, the portion are huge…

I went for a Beef filet (filet mignon) and ordered some Spinach a la creme to go with it. My friend ordered a fantastic Rib Eye. both dishes came with a nice salad on the side. We had two wonderful Argentinian sauces on the table but I forgot the names…

We had a nice bottle of wine to go with our dinner, wine from Argentina of course.

The server was a very adorable young lady and she greeted us with an excellent service and her beautiful smile. Then the owner came and recommended a dessert that is his wife’s recipe. Home made biscuits with a Dulce di leche ice cream, Dulce di leche and some grounded nuts. This was really awesome but to be honest, we had a hard time to finish

This restaurant “El Kincho is worth the try and we are wishing them a huge success in Cancun. You have the choice between a nice terrace or to seat inside. We look forward to go back…

Don Sirloin is now open in Cancun.

Don Sirloin, the very well known chain of Tacos restaurants in Playa del Carmen, just opened one in Cancun.

It is not a fancy restaurant but the Tacos, Buritos and more are excellent. This is a wide open restaurant with few space to park your car. It is not in the Hotel Zone but you will find them on Avenida Huayacan.

We were going somewhere else but soon we saw it we changed out plans. The staff is pleasant and take good care of you, that is nice. It was the first day they opened. My friend ordered Tacos al Pastor and I had a Burito Don Sirloin. Some wine to go with our lunch and this was a very nice moment.

Some dessert and some Tequila to finish our cool and delicious lunch. It was very nice to find a place where we used to go often when we were living in Playa del Carmen. We shall go again…

El Fish Fritanga, nice restaurant in Cancun.

In Cancun, at the hotel zone, there is a nice restaurant that overllok the lagune and where the foods are excellent , “El Fish Fritanga”.

The hotel zone where usually, only tourist goes is known for very high prices. This is not where the locals go often. There is fortunetly, a normal price restaurant where you will for sure enjoy the good quality foods and the very nice and friendly service provided by the staff.

It is mainly a seafood restaurant and that is what we wanted. The lobster was pricy so I had some georgious Shrimps in Coco crust. This dish was very generous and the Mango chutney was really good. My friend ordered some great Tacos. Finally a beautiful Cheesecake to finish this very nice lunch.

Very happy with this experience, we will for sure go back.

Montemar, so desappointed.

For a long time, we wanted to go and try this well known restaurant in Puerto Cancun mall. Mortemar is very elegante and known for his hight quality food.

We could not seat outside because it was full, but we had a beautiful table inside and our server did a warm welcome to us so we were very excited to finally be there. At first we ordered a bottle of Champagne. This was our first dinner out after the holidays…

A very enjoyable selection of different breads with a delicious butter was offered to us and then we decided to order our foods. Half of the menu was not available. Why ? Not only the best pieces of meat but even the Asparagus soup was not available. Hard to believe but this was true. At this point I was thinking that they will close soon due to Covid economic failures.

The dishes that we got were very good but we could not take out of our head the fact that it was not what we expected and why we came to this place. So shocking as it is not cheap at all.

I got a dessert and guess what ? They did not have an Expresso coffee as the machine was not working since 3 weeks. What is wrong with them ?

I have to tell you I just did not feel like taking more pictures. This is such an expensive dinner and so desappointing. We shall not go back at Montemar.
